How to Type in Japanese with the Microsoft IME on Windows. Typing has become such a critical part of our lives. Can you even imagine how much typing you do on a daily basis? Between Facebook, Twitter and email, your little fingers are probably quite busy typing away on the average day. So it only makes sense that if you are practicing a language, you should be able to type in that language as well, right? These days you have it pretty easy. Before the dawn of Windows, people who wanted to type in Japanese had to type with a kana keyboard. As a matter of fact Japanese keyboards still have kana printed on them, but only older people use them anymore. Nowadays, you have this handy thing called the IME that does some crazy voodoo magic to allow you to type pretty easily in Japanese. This is actually a little freebie that has been thrown into Windows. It is quite simple to set up and use actually. Installing the Japanese Microsoft IME on Windows 7. Click on the start button (that glossy windows thing in the lower left corner of your screen) and open up the control panel. Under Clock, Language, and Region, click on Change keyboards or other input methods. You should then see something like the Region and Language menu below. Click on Change keyboards…Then, you should see something like the following Text Services and Input Languages menu. The big difference will be that yours will probably not have the Japanese keyboard already installed. My PC has it installed already because I have a physical Japanese keyboard (that actually has built in shortcut keys for the Microsoft IME) and so when I installed Windows on this machine it just automatically installed the Japanese keyboard along with the Microsoft IME as the default keyboard. Yes, even if you have a physical Japanese keyboard you will still want to setup the Microsoft IME. In case you were wondering it is a Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4. I highly recommend it if you are going to be doing a lot of typing. I personally use all of these on a daily basis and highly recommend them. Anyway, for this menu click the Add… button. Nice tutorial! I think Microsoft Word gets underestimated. It has quite a few image editing tools available to it. I didn’t realize you can fill a shape with a picture! By the way, this is also where you can set the default input language. If you become really comfortable using the Japanese Microsoft IME keyboard, you can set it here as your default so that you don’t have to keep switching to it after you boot up your PC. You can use the IME to type in both Japanese or English as we will see in a bit, so this is a good option to remember. After you press the Add… button, you should see this Add Input Language menu. Scroll down and find the Japanese (Japan) options, open it up by clicking the + sign and select Microsoft IME. The Japanese keyboard only allows you to type in a kana, which as I said before is what older people in Japan use. So, to avoid confusion, don’t install it. It’ll just clutter up your language bar. After you’ve done that click OK. This will take you back to the Text Services and Input Languages menu, where you can confirm that you’ve installed the Japanese (Japan) – Microsoft IME keyboard. After doing that, go ahead and click the OK button. Then click the OK button on the Region and Language menu. And Windows might prompt you for your installation disc, or simply just ask you to log out and back in again depending on your setup. And then, finally, after all that mambo jumbo, you should have a shiny new language bar: You should see this down in the lower right of your screen hanging out with all your tray icons. You can also un- dock it as well by right- clicking the JP or EN icon and selecting Restore the Language bar. Then you’ll have this lovely toolbar to play around with: The main advantage of this is that you can switch conversion modes (you can set the IME to bias for names or speech) easily or use the IME Pad (to draw kanji that you don’t know the pronunciation of) Clicking the kana button will enable you to use those awesome kana keys. Now, let’s have a little fun typing in Japanese. Microsoft Word Windows Cannot Find Make Sure You Typed Name Espaг±olTyping in Japanese. Basically, there are 3 systems of romanization for Japanese: nihon- shiki, kunrei- shiki, and the hepburn system. In brief, nihon- shiki is a direct transliteration of the Japanese writing system, it converts ち for example into ti because it comes from the t- line of kana – た ta, て te, ち ti, と to, つ tu (actually pronounced tsu as in tsunami). However, we don’t pronounce ち as the English ti, we pronounce it chi, so that is why the kunrei- shiki system was developed. However, the hepburn system is more widely used for official things. This is generalizing a bit, but the big difference between hepburn and kunrei is that it uses more punctuation to indicate stops, long vowels and such. It is a little trickier to type in so I would recommend sticking with kunrei. Although, you can use the nihon- shiki system to type with the IME if that is what you are comfortable with. So, let’s give it a try. You can open up Wordpad (or your favorite word processing app and give it a try). To access Wordpad, you can simply type Wordpad in the search window of the start menu. Now, when your IME switched to Half- width alphanumeric, which it is by default, it’ll look like this: When it is in this mode, you can type in English like a regular keyboard. Some of the punctuation buttons will be in different places. Most noticeably the single quote - > ‘, will be above the 7 key and not off to the right like it is on the English keyboard. If you switch to hiragana mode, by clicking on the ‘A’ and selecting hiragana, you can type in Japanese. You’ll see romaji on the screen until you make a kana. For example, if you type hjkly, it’ll show up as romaji. You must type a valid kana and then it will automatically switch to the kana. So if you type the letters konnichiha, you’ll get こんにちは. Now if you hit enter, it will simply leave the kana as is. If you want to use the kanji, you have to hit the space bar. This will give you the IME’s best guess as to what kanji you want to use. If you hit the space bar again, you will see a pop up menu where you can select the kanji that you want to use. Note, this is also the way you can get katakana without having to select it in the IME. Some kana have several kanji available for them. If the kanji or often confused (they have similar meanings, same pronunciation, but different kanji) then there are notes available to help you differentiate. Unfortunately these notes are in Japanese: Two shortcuts that will definitely come in handy are the keyboard to switch between languages (SHIFT+ALT) and the shortcut to switch between alphanumeric and hiragana (ALT+`). The ` key is the one usually under the tilde ~ not the single quote. It should be here on your keyboard: These shortcuts allow you to rapidly switch between typing in English and in Japanese, which is handy if you are say practicing vocabulary on memrise or filling out a form for a Japanese website. Microsoft Word Windows Cannot Find Make Sure You Typed Name And AddressI should also note that the Microsoft IME will remember what you are using in what window. So, for example, if you are typing in Japanese in Wordpad, you should be able to switch to Firefox and type in English without changing it in the IME. If you are more of a visual person, you can check out the full video walk through on You. You can add a signature line to a document, add a graphic of your handwritten signature, or save a signature block as an AutoText building block. Hello Windows Insiders! For more information, see my disclosures here. I must admit, I am just a teensy bit obsessed with labels. I put them on just about everything in our house. They’re perfect for getting organized, helping the Cs find what they need, and adding a pretty touch to a basket or gift. If I’m making labels with adhesive vinyl, I typically use my Silhouette cutting machine. When it comes to creating pretty paper labels, though, I can’t help but head back to my old stand by, Microsoft Word, for all of my label- making needs. Word is great because it’s super- simple to use, and almost everybody has it, so it’s really easy to email and share projects. I’m sure there are about a million ways to create pretty labels in Microsoft Word, but here is my tried- and- true method: UPDATE! If you’d rather see a video version of this tutorial, click here! Choose your shape. Beginning with a blank document, click on the “Insert” tab, select “Shapes,” and choose the desired shape for your label. I picked the circle. Adjust your outline and fill settings. Once you’ve drawn your shape to your desired size {I chose 2. I usually like to make the outline of my shape a little thicker so that it is well defined when I print it out. To do that, go to the “Format” tab, and under the “Shape Outline” drop down, you will see “Weight.” I chose 3 pt; you can make yours thinner or thicker depending on your preference. You can also change the color of your outline in the “Shape Outline” drop down. I picked dark red.} While we’re changing colors, let’s go ahead and change our fill color as well. Right above “Shape Outline,” you’ll see the “Shape Fill” option. You have a few choices here. You can fill your shape with a solid color. Or you may want to put a design inside your shape. By choosing the “Picture” option from the “Shape Fill” drop down, you can use any picture file on your computer as your shape’s background. You can also play with the “Gradient” and “Texture” options until you find the background of your choice. Add a layer, if desired. I think it always looks nice to add a second layer to your label. You get to have a fun color or pattern in the background, but you also get a clean white surface for your wording. To add a layer, you’ll go through a similar process: choose your shape {“Insert” tab, “Shapes” button}, and size it correctly {I did 2″ x 2″.}…Then adjust your outline width and outline and fill colors. I went with the 3 pt dark red outline again, and I chose to keep the fill color white, but you could always pick a color. Add your text. To do this, you’ll want to go to the “Insert” tab and select “Text Box.” Choose the “Draw Text Box” option at the bottom of the drop down menu. Draw your text box over your existing shape. Then, so the text box doesn’t block the beautiful label you’ve made, you’ll want to make it transparent. With the text box selected, go to the “Text Box” tab, and under “Shape Fill” choose “No Fill.” You will also want to choose “No Fill” for the “Shape Outline.”Once your text box is transparent, you’re ready to type. Add your words, and change the size, font, and alignment like you would in a regular Word document. You can also play with color! I used a 3. 6 pt font called “Juice ITC” in dark blue. Group” your label. The last thing I like to do when I get the label the way I want it is to group it together. This allows me to move it around the page as one unit rather than trying to move each piece individually. To use the group feature, hold down the “Ctrl” key and click on each element of your label so they are all selected. This can get a little tricky. You’ll know your cursor is in the right place to click when it becomes an arrow with a plus sign.}Next you’ll want to right click on your selection and under “Grouping” choose “Group.”TA- DA! Your label is now one cohesive unit! You can move it around the page, copy and paste it, change the text, go crazy with it! Now for all you overachievers out there…The Bonus Round. Another fun thing to play with is the outline style. I’ll start out with the same white circle with a dark red outline, but instead of using a colored background, I’ll add interest with the second layer. For the “Shape Outline” of the inner circle, go down to “Dashes.” You will be able to choose dots {as I did}, squares, dashed lines, etc. Just another cute dimension to add to your labels! Though fancy programs and machines can be really great, it is possible to make pretty labels just using Microsoft Word. In my opinion, it is the simplest program to navigate, and it still gives beautiful, fully- custom results. Printing Your Labels. After you’ve created your cute labels, what’s next? I typically print mine out (with my home ink jet printer) on white card stock so that they’re sturdy and cut them out by hand. If they’re going to be in a higher traffic area, I’ll laminate them to protect them a little bit more. Laminated or not, I typically just attach my labels with tape or velcro dots. If you want to use a label that is more like a sticker, Avery has many templates for their stickers. You would simply head to their website, find the template that matches the stickers that you purchased (you can search by the number on the pack), download the template, and create your design within the guides they provide. My Favorite Labeling Supplies. Looking for some of the supplies I’ve mentioned above? You can find them here: And just for fun, I’ve included a page of simple printable labels to get you started. Happy labeling!{Simple Printable Labels}What is your favorite way to make labels? This post contains affiliate links. For more information, see my disclosures here.

The open-source Journal of Speech and Language Pathology-Applied Behavior Analysis (JSLP-ABA) was published online from 2006 to 2010. We present an annotated. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a scientific discipline concerned with analyzing how the principles of learning affect environmental stimuli, and systematically. Reinforcement - Wikipedia. Diagram of operant conditioning. In behavioral psychology, reinforcement is a consequence that will strengthen an organism's future behavior whenever that behavior is preceded by a specific antecedent stimulus. This strengthening effect may be measured as a higher frequency of behavior (e. Rewarding stimuli, which are associated with "wanting" and "liking" (desire and pleasure, respectively) and appetitive behavior, function as positive reinforcers; [1] the converse statement is also true: positive reinforcers provide a desirable stimulus.[1] Reinforcement does not require an individual to consciously perceive an effect elicited by the stimulus.[2] Thus, reinforcement occurs only if there is an observable strengthening in behavior. However, there is also negative reinforcement, which is characterized by taking away an undesirable stimulus. An ibuprofen is a negative reinforcer because it takes away pain. In most cases, the term "reinforcement" refers to an enhancement of behavior, but this term is also sometimes used to denote an enhancement of memory; for example, "post- training reinforcement" refers to the provision of a stimulus (such as food) after a learning session in an attempt to increase the retained breadth, detail, and duration of the individual memories or overall memory just formed.[3] The memory- enhancing stimulus can also be one whose effects are directly rather than only indirectly emotional, as with the phenomenon of "flashbulb memory," in which an emotionally highly intense stimulus can incentivize memory of a set of a situation's circumstances well beyond the subset of those circumstances that caused the emotionally significant stimulus, as when people of appropriate age are able to remember where they were and what they were doing when they learned of the assassination of John F. Kennedy or of the September 1. Reinforcement is an important part of operant or instrumental conditioning. Terminology[edit]Addiction and dependence glossary[6][7][8][9]• addiction – a brain disorder characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences• addictive behavior – a behavior that is both rewarding and reinforcing• addictive drug – a drug that is both rewarding and reinforcing• dependence – an adaptive state associated with a withdrawal syndrome upon cessation of repeated exposure to a stimulus (e. Main section: Reinforcement#Operant conditioning. In the behavioral sciences, the terms "positive" and "negative" refer when used in their strict technical sense to the nature of the action performed by the conditioner rather than to the responding operant's evaluation of that action and its consequence(s). Positive" actions are those that add a factor, be it pleasant or unpleasant, to the environment, whereas "negative" actions are those that remove or withhold from the environment a factor of either type. In turn, the strict sense of "reinforcement" refers only to reward- based conditioning; the introduction of unpleasant factors and the removal or withholding of pleasant factors are instead referred to as "punishment," which when used in its strict sense thus stands in contradistinction to "reinforcement." Thus, "positive reinforcement" refers to the addition of a pleasant factor, "positive punishment" refers to the addition of an unpleasant factor, "negative reinforcement" refers to the removal or withholding of an unpleasant factor, and "negative punishment" refers to the removal or withholding of a pleasant factor. This usage is at odds with some non- technical usages of the four term combinations, especially in the case of the term "negative reinforcement," which is often used to denote what technical parlance would describe as "positive punishment" in that the non- technical usage interprets "reinforcement" as subsuming both reward and punishment and "negative" as referring to the responding operant's evaluation of the factor being introduced. By contrast, technical parlance would use the term "negative reinforcement" to describe encouragement of a given behavior by creating a scenario in which an unpleasant factor is or will be present but engaging in the behavior results in either escaping from that factor or preventing its occurrence, as in Martin Seligman's experiments involving dogs' learning processes regarding the avoidance of electric shock. Introduction[edit]B. F. Skinner was a well- known and influential researcher who articulated many of the theoretical constructs of reinforcement and behaviorism. Skinner defined reinforcers according to the change in response strength (response rate) rather than to more subjective criteria, such as what is pleasurable or valuable to someone. Accordingly, activities, foods or items considered pleasant or enjoyable may not necessarily be reinforcing (because they produce no increase in the response preceding them). Stimuli, settings, and activities only fit the definition of reinforcers if the behavior that immediately precedes the potential reinforcer increases in similar situations in the future; for example, a child who receives a cookie when he or she asks for one. If the frequency of "cookie- requesting behavior" increases, the cookie can be seen as reinforcing "cookie- requesting behavior". If however, "cookie- requesting behavior" does not increase the cookie cannot be considered reinforcing. The sole criterion that determines if a stimulus is reinforcing is the change in probability of a behavior after administration of that potential reinforcer. Other theories may focus on additional factors such as whether the person expected a behavior to produce a given outcome, but in the behavioral theory, reinforcement is defined by an increased probability of a response. The study of reinforcement has produced an enormous body of reproducible experimental results. Reinforcement is the central concept and procedure in special education, applied behavior analysis, and the experimental analysis of behavior and is a core concept in some medical and psychopharmacology models, particularly addiction, dependence, and compulsion. Brief history[edit]Laboratory research on reinforcement is usually dated from the work of Edward Thorndike, known for his experiments with cats escaping from puzzle boxes.[1. A number of others continued this research, notably B. F. Skinner, who published his seminal work on the topic in The Behavior of Organisms, in 1. Notably Skinner argued that positive reinforcement is superior to punishment in shaping behavior.[1. Though punishment may seem just the opposite of reinforcement, Skinner claimed that they differ immensely, saying that positive reinforcement results in lasting behavioral modification (long- term) whereas punishment changes behavior only temporarily (short- term) and has many detrimental side- effects. A great many researchers subsequently expanded our understanding of reinforcement and challenged some of Skinner's conclusions. For example, Azrin and Holz defined punishment as a “consequence of behavior that reduces the future probability of that behavior,”[1. Research on the effects of positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement and punishment continue today as those concepts are fundamental to learning theory and apply to many practical applications of that theory. Operant conditioning[edit]The term operant conditioning was introduced by B. F. Skinner to indicate that in his experimental paradigm the organism is free to operate on the environment. In this paradigm the experimenter cannot trigger the desirable response; the experimenter waits for the response to occur (to be emitted by the organism) and then a potential reinforcer is delivered. In the classical conditioning paradigm the experimenter triggers (elicits) the desirable response by presenting a reflex eliciting stimulus, the Unconditional Stimulus (UCS), which he pairs (precedes) with a neutral stimulus, the Conditional Stimulus (CS). Reinforcement is a basic term in operant conditioning. For the punishment aspect of operant conditioning - see punishment (psychology). Positive reinforcement[edit]Positive reinforcement occurs when a desirable event or stimulus is presented as a consequence of a behavior and the behavior increases.[1. Example: Whenever a rat presses a button, it gets a treat. If the rat starts pressing the button more often, the treat serves to positively reinforce this behavior. Example: A father gives candy to his daughter when she picks up her toys. Database Tools > Interbase Firebird Yaffil > Db. Express drivers. Torry's Delphi Pages. By Devart. Please refer to the updated article here: FAQ: Garmin Maps | Cloning Method: Install a Map Update Directly to the SD Card. I posted this over on the GPS Review forum and thought it might be useful to the POI Factory members. This technique was suggested by member Boyd on that forum. I took his idea and tested it with my two nuvis (7. T and 8. 55). You may have already noticed a certain peculiarity in Garmin software. If you have a removable drive on your computer (SD card or thumb drive) and create a \Garmin folder at the root of this drive, then copy the file Garmin. Device. xml from your nuvi into this folder, the Garmin programs like POI Loader and my. Garmin. com seem to recognize the removable drive as a nuvi. Boyd speculated that you might be able to use this quirk to fool the map update installer and directly install a map update to a SD card. It took some experimentation and several tries, but I was able to install the complete map on SD with both of my nuvis. Both nuvis operate correctly with ALL of the NA map data on the SD card. Here is a summary of the steps I used to install maps directly to the SD card: 1) Do a complete backup of your nuvi BEFORE you attempt this procedure. This MAY allow you to recover your nuvi if something goes wrong. Use Web. Updater to make sure you have the latest software on your nuvi before you try this. If you have old software, you will have trouble with the map download because my. Garmin. com will try to do a software update on your (fake nuvi) SD card prior to the map download! Start with a clean SD card in your computer or SD card reader. Make sure it is formatted FAT3. Create the \Garmin folder. Connect your nuvi to the computer in data mode and copy file Garmin. Device. xml from the \Garmin folder on the nuvi into the \Garmin folder on the SD card. Nuvi 8xx series only: Copy the complete ASR folder and its contents from the \Garmin folder on the nuvi into the \Garmin folder of the SD card.]4) Safely remove the nuvi from the computer, but leave the SD card mounted on the computer. Garmin, click on the my. Maps tab, select the map download link and use option 2 (Map update installer). Proceed to download and install the map files to the SD card. When the map update installer completes, all new map files are on the SD card in the \Garmin folder: gmapprom. On some models you will also have files gmaptz. D. img and Dnnnnnnn. A. JCV (in the \Garmin\JCV folder). Make sure all files are sucessfully downloaded to the SD card before continuing. If your nuvi supports Junction View, this would be a good time to check the Dnnnnnnn. A. JCV file that was downloaded to the SD card. If you got the small file and want the large one, you may as well replace it now. Use the link provided elsewhere in the forum to download the large JCV file and copy it to the SD card in the \Garmin\JCV folder. Delete the small JCV file that was downloaded by the map update installer. Connect the nuvi to the PC in data mode and delete the following files from the \Garmin folder on the nuvi internal drive: gmapprom. Also delete file GMAP3. D. img and the complete \JCV folder and its contents if they are present on your nuvi. Nuvi 8xx series only: Delete the ASR folder and its contents from the \Garmin folder of your nuvi.]8) If present, copy file gmaptz. SD card back into the \Garmin folder of the nuvi. Nuvi 8xx series only: Copy the entire updated ASR folder and its contents from the SD card back into the \Garmin folder of the nuvi.]9) On the SD card rename the following files gmapprom. Delete file Garmin. Device. xml from the SD card, so it will no longer show up as a fake nuvi in Garmin software. Safely remove the SD card and nuvi from the computer. Install the SD card in the nuvi. Boot the nuvi, go to Tools > Settings > map > map info and make sure the full NA map (and 3. D map if your model supports it) show up and are checked. Test the nuvi to make sure all map detail is working. On the 7. 55. T, the detail NA maps, 3. D map, and JCV file all work correctly from the SD card. The only file from the map download that has to be on the internal drive is the gmaptz. After completing this procedure with CN NA 2. I had 3. 5 GB of free space on the 7. T's 4 GB internal drive. On the 8. 55, the speech recognition files are updated as part of the map update. The easiest way I found to handle this was to copy the ASR folder to the SD card, perform the map install, then copy the updated ASR folder back to the nuvi. These steps are included in the above procedure. This procedure worked well for me, but be aware that you are removing your detail map files from the internal storage of your nuvi. TRY IT AT YOUR OWN RISK! Note that these steps are for the older 7x. It seems likely that the procedure can be easily adapted to the other nuvi models of this generation like the 2xx, 7xx and 8xx. I am not sure what additional considerations there are for the newer 1xxx, 2xxx and 3xxx models that have the . If anyone tries this, please post your results here. Tom. Tom Android v. His web site can be found at http:// Pretty much all the books on flatheads don’t recommend more than dual. He sold me on the idea of a very simple system. The plan called for a boiler to supply hot water at up to 180 degrees and then it is mixed down to around 100 degrees. Installing check valves in a recirculation system | 2. I had an interesting discussion recently about the use of check valves. One plumbing contractor commented that most plumbers don’t know how and where to install check valves. I countered with, “Shouldn’t the engineer designing the system tell the plumbing contractor where the check valves must be installed?”. His response was very appropriate: “What about single- family dwellings?” Touche! What about single- family dwellings? For that matter, what about any water distribution system? When and where do we install check valves? The conversation regarding check valves all centered around hot water recirculation systems, so let me limit this review to those systems. One contractor’s opinion was that anytime you have a recirculation system, you need a check valve. Another contractor said, “I use positive displacement pumps, so you can eliminate the check valves.”. Being the instigator that I am, I asked, “How many check valves should there be on a hot water recirculation system and where do you install them?”. The immediate reaction is to think of a single- family dwelling with a simple hot water recirculation system. However, when you get into larger commercial buildings, there are many zones, hence, many check valves. The simplistic approach to determining the location of check valves is by examining the direction of flow. We all know what direction of flow we want in a piping system. If the water in the piping system always went in that direction, we would never need a check valve. However, plumbing water distribution systems are never that simple; rarely does the water always go in the direction we would like. It comes down to analyzing the pressure differentials that can occur in a piping system. If a fixture is opened to flow water, the pressure in the line is instantly lowered. Pressure is the energy that moves water through the piping. If you run out of pressure, the flow stops. Pretty simple philosophy. If you have two water lines intersecting, the flow is always going to go from high pressure to low pressure. Hence, in a recirculating system, the hot water being pumped through the piping always tends to have a higher pressure than the return line to which it connects. If the recirculation system connects to the cold water supply to the water heater, the water can reverse course and go into the cold water supply. If a faucet or fixture is opened to only flow the cold water, the hot recirculating water will flow into the cold water. Hence, hot water will come out of the cold water faucet. This phenomenon doesn’t last long. As soon as the pressures equalize, the cold water again begins to flow out of the faucet. But who wants hot water out of a faucet before they get the cold water? In that same situation, if the recirculation pump is off and someone opens the hot water faucet near the intersection, cold water will come out and probably continue to come out of the faucet. That is because the pressure differentials allow the cold water to flow to the fixture rather than the hot water. In this example, hot water may not come out of the faucet until the recirculation pump turns back on. What was just described is an installation where two check valves are necessary: one on the cold water supply to the water heater before the connection of the recirculating piping, and the other on the recirculating piping after the last connection of a hot water fixture. Without two check valves, the system will not work properly. Some plumbing contractors have told me they can eliminate the check valve on the recirculating piping by running the pump 2. It is true that if the pump is always running, you may never need the second check valve. However, the energy codes no longer allow recirculating pumps to run continuously. They are required to be controlled with a shutdown period. The other problem is you could have an overwhelming demand for hot water in the piping system. Then the pump’s small increase in pressure is lost by a hot water demand greater than anticipated. In that situation, the cold water will still flow in reverse and come out some of the hot water faucets. The ideal situation is still to install a check valve on the recirculating piping. In analyzing this piping layout, it was easy to see where check valves were needed by looking at the direction of flow and possible direction of flow. Check valves make sure that water only goes in the direction of flow we want. Check valve vs. flow control. When we get into a more complex system, there may be multiple zones in the hot water distribution system. Whenever a zone connects to the main piping in the recirculation system, a check valve is required. A proper design will have a flow control valve installed at the end of the zone to regulate how much water goes through that zone. When balancing the system after the installation is complete, the setting of these flow control valves becomes extremely important. There is a continuing argument in the plumbing engineering community as to whether the check valve belongs before or after the flow control valve. The reason given for having the check valve before the flow control valve is because the flow control valve can be set up with the pressure drop across the check valve already considered. The reason given for installing the check valve downstream of the flow control valve is to prevent the flow control valve from being subjected to possible swings in pressure or reversals of water flow. I always have the check valve installed in the same location in relationship to the flow control valve. But I’m not going to say how I do it, so as to not offend those who follow the opposite point of view. If you think you only need a flow control valve and not a check valve, I can take you to many buildings where the hot water recirculation system failed. It is easier to install the check valve when the system is being installed, as opposed to dealing with lawsuits and installing check valves after the building is up and running. To be clear, I’m only speaking about spring- loaded check valves. I do not like swing checks in plumbing water distribution systems, ever! But that’s a subject of another column. To fully understand how to install a high- velocity HVAC system, one must know what it is and what it does. Basically, it is a small duct, high- velocity airflow, heating and cooling system designed to fit in structures that have space constraints or architectural limitations or requirements. Many home designers choose such a system because they do not have to design a unique structure to hide the heating and cooling system components. The high- velocity system distributes conditioned air by means of flexible, pre- insulated, 2- inch inside diameter tubing, which is fed through wall structures and around obstructions. The system uses sound attenuation materials that absorb airborne and regenerated noise and provide a quiet comfort system. The heart of the system is a single cabinet blower and coil air handler that is designed to fit in tight spaces while providing efficient cooling and heating from its refrigeration coil. The 1. 0 steps to a successful installation are: 1. Calculate The Load The first step is to do a load calculation. Space. Pak provides a "Kwik Way" sizing form that is designed to accurately provide a room- by- room load for the high- velocity system. Also offered is an "Informer" CD including calculation software. The software can be downloaded at no cost at www. Now that the system has been properly sized for the structure, we can begin our equipment installation. Find A Suitable Location For The Fan Coil Unit The initial consideration is the location of the fan coil unit. The fan coil unit may be located in an unconditioned space. Areas such as an attic, garage, or crawl space are acceptable as long as the location is protected from the weather and local codes are met. The fan coil unit may also be located in a conditioned space such as a basement, closet, or utility room. Two types of fan coil configuration are offered - horizontal and vertical cabinets. One must also consider the location of the return air filter box and duct. Another important consideration is the location of the 9- inch inside diameter plenum, air supply tubing, refrigerant lines, and condensate drain line. When installing a fan coil unit in an attic space, such as above a ceiling, it is recommended to install a secondary drain pan and/or a float switch. Again check your local codes for this requirement. The unit may be installed on a platform or suspended from a pre- assembled suspended platform. The platform (fixed or suspended) must be close enough to the selected return air box opening for ease of connecting the return air plenum duct (see below for platform instructions). Cut The Return Air Opening Next, cut the return air opening. Select your exact location for the return air duct. Avoid installing the return air box in a dining room, living room, or kitchen unless the air duct can be installed with a 1. Once the opening is cut based on the size and dimensions of the return air opening, the fan coil may be passed through the opening. The return air box is designed to fit between joists that are 1. For wall applications such as when using a vertical free- standing fan coil unit, be sure the opening will allow for a 9. Next check for proper fit of your return air box. However, do not install the return air box until your installation is complete because you may want to pass materials for your installation through this opening. Construct A Simple Platform You can construct a simple platform based on the size of the fan coil unit. Instructions for this may be found in the installation manual). It is recommended to use 2- by 8- inch stud lumber and a minimum of 1/2- inch plywood for platform construction. Always use the provided isolation strips under the unit for best performance. For locations where the fan coil unit must be suspended, suspend the platform overhead by 1/4- inch threaded rods. Never connect a threaded rod directly to the fan coil cabinet. It's not necessary to secure the fan coil unit to the platform because the weight of the unit will hold it in position. Remember to leave room for servicing. Attach Supply Plenum Ring Remember that the supply plenum ring will be several inches lower than the bottom of the fan coil unit. It will be necessary to move the fan coil past the platform edge to accommodate the plenum ring. The plenum ring attaches to a square opening with four screws provided. In addition, be sure to attach the plenum ring gasket to the fan coil cabinet before mounting the supply plenum ring. Connect The Condensate Drain You are now ready to connect the condensate drain trap (supplied) to the fan coil unit. Refer to the instructions with the supplied condensate drain trap. Always run the condensate drain line from the trap to a suitable drain in accordance with local codes. Be sure that the drain line is pitched 1/4 inch per foot. Never connect the condensate line to a closed drain system. Always use a secondary drain pan for overhead systems. Connect Refrigerant Lines Connect the refrigerant lines from the outdoor condensing unit to the indoor fan coil unit. Always follow the condensing unit (outdoor unit) manufacturer's instructions for installing, sizing, trapping, charging, and using filter- dryers. Connect Supply Tubing And Plenum Duct When installing the air distribution components, it is always a good idea to do a system layout based on your sizing parameters. The plenum duct may be run in practically any location that is accessible for the attachment of the supply tubing. Review suggested layouts in the installation manual). Plenum duct installation, all tees, elbows, and branch runs must be a minimum of 1. It is recommended that you keep the use of tees and elbows to a minimum to keep the system pressure drop to a minimum. The plenum duct comes in 6- foot lengths and may be cut to desired lengths depending on your system layout. When installing the plenum to the unit, it is recommended you cut off the male end of the first section. Then insert the plenum duct section into the receiving collar on the fan coil unit. Be sure to push the duct in tight to form a snug joint. Then flatten the sheet metal tabs against the plenum duct and insert the flat head pins. Next, wrap and tape in place the 6- inch- wide piece of foil face insulation over the taped joint. Be sure the insulation is pushed up against the fan coil unit. Continue to assemble the plenum duct making sure the "shiplap" joints are snug and taped securely. Space. Pak recommends Polyken #2. Once your plenum duct has been installed, the plenum end cap will now go on the end of your plenum run. The plenum end cap contains an insulated cushion that is pushed up tight against the duct end. Hold the end cap firmly in place, then insert the flat head pins through the sheet metal tabs at the end of the cap. Cross- tape the end cap securely with a circumferential wrap around the end cap. It's always a good idea to strap or cradle the plenum to avoid plenum movement during operation, which could cause joints to come loose. Install Terminator Outlets And Sound Attenuation Tubing You are now ready to begin installation of the room terminators/outlets and the sound attenuation tubing. Room terminators and sound attenuating tubing are provided in the installation kits.) Mark the locations where you would like to install the room terminators. When marking the location for the room terminator, the center of the terminator should be 5 inches from a wall edge. When installed in a room- ceiling corner, the location should be 5 inches from each wall edge. After you mark the location, drill a 1/8- inch hole for the outlet. Allow at least 2 inches of clearance all around the 1/8- inch hole. After all clearances have been checked, use a 4- inch hole saw to cut a hole, using the 1/8- inch hole as your pilot. Next assemble the room terminator to the sound attenuating tubing by fitting the connectors together and twisting until tight. If the terminator is being installed in a floor location, you must fabricate a small 1/4- by 1- 1/2- inch- square screen and place the screen between the terminator faceplate and the tubing connector. Then push the free end of the sound attenuating tubing through the 4- inch hole until the toggles on the terminator snap into place. Center the two spring clips on a line parallel to the direction of the tubing so the faceplate doesn't pull away from the ceiling. Install Supply Tubing You are now ready to install the supply tubing. Hackers Breach Cybersecurity Company In Apparent Revenge On Employee.
